Roane County Park, located on Watts Bar Lake, features lots of fun family activities - splash pad, 18-hole disc golf course, 1.5 mile paved walking trail, tennis courts, fishing pier, covered picnic shelters, playgrounds, swimming area, canoes, baseball field, and more.  There is also meeting room space available.  Lakeside primitive camping spots also available.  Open year round.  Bus parking available. Pets allowed on Leash 9 am - 9 pm.  Directions: Exit 350 (Midtown) on I-40. South on Pine Ridge Road to Hwy 70, turning right at light heading west on Hwy 70.  Roane County Park is approx. 4 miles on the left.

Located in the heart of the Cornstalk Heights Historic District, this park includes a beautiful new covered gazebo/pavilion, walking trail, and children's playground.

 

KINGSTON CITY PARKS

Southwest Point Park is located on a hill overlooking Watts Bar Lake where the Clinch River runs into the Tennessee.  Besides picnic pavilions, this park includes a sports complex with lighted baseball and softball fields, concession stand, press box, bleachers, and restrooms.  There is also a soccer field and a 400-meter track.  This park is also home to Fort Southwest Point.  Reconstructed on its original site this historic fort and museum includes barracks, blockhouse, and palisade walls.

Kingston's City Park is located on Watts Bar Lake in the heart of Kingston.  Home of the Smokin' the Water July 4th festivities, this park has two children's playgrounds, tennis courts, sand volleyball, basketball court, picnic tables, grills, rest rooms, boat ramps, docks and a brand new large covered pavilion with it's own kitchen, ceiling fans and bathrooms.

Kingston's Community Center offers rental facilities for meetings & events, as well as kitchen facilities.  The center is also home to the Kingston Community Pool, open seven days a week during the summer months.  Season passes, swimming lessons, pool parties, and exercise are all available at the pool. This park is located near the intersection of Hwy 58 & Hwy 70 along the banks of Watts Bar Lake.  This park has picnic tables, boat ramp, dock, and  benches to watch the magnificent sunset over the lake.  The walking trail runs through this park and from Kingston City Park to Southwest Point.

This 3-mile walking/jogging trail runs from Kingston City Park to Southwest Point Park all along Watts Bar Lake providing gorgeous views from either direction.  Park benches, water fountains and picnic areas are located along the trail.

This park is located on the Clinch River where it meets the Emory River, with a large boat ramp, dock and parking lot - making this a perfect starting point for fisherman.  There is also a covered pavilion, picnic area, grills, and skateboard park (helmet laws do apply).

This complex includes three well-manicured softball fields with lighting and one baseball diamond (which is used by the University of Tennessee), soccer fields, playground, and a covered picnic area.

This park is in the center of historic downtown Rockwood and includes park benches, a covered stage, memorial fountain, and Rockwood's iconic clock.  During their festivals this park takes center stage for all the activities, including pageants, live music, and more!  Get a box lunch at one of the downtown restaurants and have a picnic in the park.

This park is also home to the Rockwood Community Center that includes a swimming pool and indoor basketball facility.  The swimming pool is open every day during the summer months and offers season passes, swimming lessons, and swim party hours.  Call for a complete schedule or more information.

 

 

OVERLOOKS & WILDLIFE AREAS

Approximately 11,000 acres, this area is on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau with magnificent views of the valley, Watts Bar Lake, and even the Smoky Mountains on a clear day.  The overlook, believed to be one of the highest in the Cumberlands, is the best point of access to this area.  This area is a celebrated site for witnessing fall migration of not only raptors but also songbirds and butterflies. The overlook possesses a small parking area, picnic tables and observation platforms. Also, a spur trail leading to Walden Ridge Trail is located at the overlook adjacent to the fire tower. Bring a scope for better viewing birds from the viewing area atop the mountain.  Open year-round during daylight hours.
Directions: From I-40, take exit 338 (Westel) and travel south on Westel Road for 2.7 miles to US 70. Turn left and travel east on US 70 for 1.1 miles towards Rockwood. Tower Road will be on the left just before entering the town of Rockwood. From Rockwood, travel 2.1 miles west on US 70 to entrance. Follow signs for Mt Roosevelt Scenic Overlook from both directions. The Overlook and Tower are at the end of the road.

Paint Rock Refuge TWRA Wildlife Management Area [map]
Forest, shrub edges, and fields are found on this 1,600 acre WMA that is adjacent to Watts Bar Lake. Boat ramp access is available via Paint Rock Road.  Closed November 15 through February.  Open during daylight hours.  In spring and summer, Osprey are common nesting birds across the lake. They nest on poles and structures and can be viewed best by boat; however please keep a safe distance from nesting pairs to avoid disturbing them and their young. In winter, waterfowl and Bald Eagles are common. Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night-heron, and Great Egret nest on islands in the lake. White-tailed deer, raccoon, muskrat, fox, and coyote are common around the lake.

Oak Ridge Reservation [website]
The Oak Ridge Reservation has 37,000 acres that includes large expanses of mature hardwood forest, unbroken by development or farmland; brushy corridors and cutover forest; abandoned pastures; grasslands; cedar glades and barrens; and wetlands. These habitats make the area attractive to a large and diverse number of species. Several access points open to the public are available for hiking and bird watching.  Visitors must heed warnings when encountering road or area closed signs.  Open year round during daylight hours.  Woodland birds are common to abundant across Oak Ridge. Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Chuck-will's-widow, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Acadian Flycatcher, Yellow-throated Vireo, Wood Thrush, Yellow-throated Warbler, Prothonotary Warbler, Worm-eating Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, Kentucky Warbler, and Summer Tanager are found commonly in summer. Brown-headed Nuthatch, White-breasted Nuthatch, and other resident woodland birds are common year round.
